Where Understanding Shapes Care
Individualized psychotherapy and psychiatric care grounded in understanding, collaboration, and the whole person for adults in Central Austin.
Welcome to Calder Psychotherapy & Psychiatry. I’m Olivia Calder, a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, and I’m glad you’re here.
My clinical experience includes inpatient psychiatry, outpatient care, private practice, women’s health, and public health. I earned my Bachelor of Science in Biology from St. Edward’s University in Austin and my Master of Science in Nursing focusing on Women’s Health, with a subspecialty in Public Health from The University of Texas at Austin. I then completed my Post-Master’s Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner degree at The University of Texas at Austin.
As a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, I am trained and certified to provide both psychotherapy and psychiatric care, including evaluating mental health concerns, diagnosing psychiatric conditions, and prescribing and managing medications when appropriate. This allows me to consider therapy and medication together rather than treating them as separate parts of care. I also work in collaboration with a supervising psychiatrist, providing an additional level of clinical consultation and support.
At the center of my work is the therapeutic relationship. While medication can be an important part of treatment, I see it as one possible tool for creating greater steadiness, clarity, and relief—not as the whole of psychiatric care. Whether our work includes psychotherapy, medication, or both, treatment is collaborative, thoughtful, and unhurried. We can explore the patterns, experiences, and concerns that may be contributing to a sense of unease. Together, we will move toward greater connection, self-understanding, and new perspectives.
Austin is home to me, and I value the creativity, authenticity, individuality, and sense of connection that have long made this city distinctive. I’ve called Austin home since the “slacker” days and was lucky enough to catch more than a few great shows at Liberty Lunch. My practice is intentionally inclusive of all people across identities, relationships, cultures, values, and lived experiences, and is LGBTQIA+ affirming. I believe meaningful mental health care should make room for the full complexity of who you are—not ask you to leave important parts of yourself outside the room.
